So you want to become an ace-pilot? There are a few things you'll need to know about Battlefield 3's jets before you begin to play.
General Tips:
1. The speed at which you turn fastest: 280-300 MPH.
2. If you cannot break someone on your tail, head for the sky and right before you stall break your jet and turn downwards, you will force the enemy to head straight up and will give you time to regain your positioning.
3. If you have nothing else to do, repeatedly spot enemy ground units and use your machine gun to shoot them down. To hit a ground soldier, aim directly below the red-marker above their head, it will be nearly an instant kill.
4. If you need to dodge a missile, when you hear the incoming-missile sound, turn upward at 315-320 MPH towards the origin of the missiles, and do this as tight as you can. The missiles will swing past you and will not have enough time to make full circle. As of the April 3rd patch, this is extremely hard to do.
5. Always choose the Russian's jets over the F35 fighter, the F35 can be found in the Gulf of Oman and Wake Island maps. The reason for this is that the F35 are more toned for anti-ground, while the Flankers are overall suited for both air and ground combat. The Flankers turn faster and tighter and can easily out-maneuver and destroy an F35.
6. If an enemy has flares or ECM jammer, fire one missile to waste their flares, then when your jet passes the flares they have launched, fire the second missile. By the time this all transpires, you should have your first missile back and can take the enemy down, or you can use your machine gun to finish them off.
7. To take down a helicopter, make a long straight path, preferably from an above angle, and fire your machine guns at long distance. When you reach a distance where you can lock on the helicopter before you arrive to point blank, switch to your missiles and lock on. Do not fire your missiles until you are extremely close to the helicopter. This will cause any flares/Ecm Jammers to be ignored, destroying the Helicopter.
8. Flying low, as of the recent patch, prevents enemy aircraft from locking on to your vehicle. This can be helpful, especially if you're low health, and need to fly around a bit to repair.
Perks:
1. Air-To-Air:
A. Air Radar - This is a must if you wish to see where your enemy is and where they are turning. Extremely helpful in out-maneuvering your enemy.
B. Extinguishers - The Extinguisher is a vital perk, wait till the locked-on-enemy fires there missiles, when they do, fly away straight to the edge of either map. When the missiles hit you, immediately put out the fire with your extinguisher and turn towards the battle once more, by the time you return you will have nearly fully repaired. If you are being chased however, we have tips to circumvent that however.
C. Heat-Seekers - Use these to destroy instantly any non-flare or non-Ecm jets/helicopters. However, if they do have ECM or Flares, fire one missile at a time, and use machine guns to finish the kill.
2. Air-To-Ground:
A. Beam-Scanning OR Air Radar - Either or works here, but if you are focusing on killing vehicles swiftly, I advise using the beam scanning. However; if you plan to focus on infantry and the ocassional vehicle, get Air Radar, as it will help you to out-maneuver and avoid enemy aircraft.
B. Extinguisher - Same reason as before, you can use this to easily escape and repair to return to battle later.
C. Rocket Pods OR Guided Missile: The rocket pods should be used to attack infantry/buildings, however; since the April 3rd patch, the guided missile is significantly more powerful. The ability to target enemy vehicles as well as equipment and mortars is instrumental to success. furthermore, you can use the missiles to get one-hit kills on jeeps and light vehicles, and insta-disables on tanks.
